What We're Drinking Now: 2010 Meridian White Cabernet Sauvignon
You're probably thinking the same thing I did when my wine-loving friend raved about an 'awesome White Cab from Paso' she'd just tried:
'Whaaaaat!?'
'Wait, do you mean white Zin?'
and 'Ooooh, well then, I kinda wanna try that!'
Well, I did try it, and while it bears little resemblance to its red counterpart, or the Provencal roses we'd come to love in France, it was pretty darn tasty in its own right!
First off, its pink! Bright freaking pink, and just fun to look at in the glass. Upon first whiff, I was immediately reminded of those spirally strawberries 'n' cream jolly rancher candies, but was the brightness on the nose that really excited me.
'Maybe' I thought, "Just maybe this pink wine, like a Victoria Secret model who moonlights as a chemist, was more than just pretty to look at...'
After a few swirls, I crossed my fingers, banking on my friends promise that it didn't taste like White Zin, and took a sip. To my extreme happiness, it was delicious and had way more going on than I expected. Bright and fruity it was, but with just enough acidity to cut the sweetness and encourage another sip. No cloying, syrupy, poorly made, sugar-water here; fresh strawberries 'n' cream echoed the aroma and a hint of pink lemonade lead up to a crisp, clean finish.
We drank it for dinner with a homemade chicken pot-pie (surprisingly good pairing), but it'd be equally lovely for lunch with a seafood salad or sushi, or even at brunch with fruit, cheese and eggs. Way to go Paso!
